A generous grant from the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation has secured further scholarships for students applying to the MA Financial Journalism course at City, University of London, as well as enhanced funding for the programme’s unique summer school based in New York and Shanghai.

The foundation is also continuing its support for an endowed professorship in financial journalism. In total, it has pledged to contribute £550,000 over the next three years.

From September 2017, up to four students will be backed each year by the new Marjorie Deane Intellectual Excellence Scholarships, which will cover course fees in full. The funding will also contribute to living expenses for scholarship students in financial need.

Three students are on the MA Financial Journalism programme in the 2016/17 academic year thanks to scholarships from the foundation.

Steve Schifferes, Marjorie Deane Professor of Financial Journalism, said: “The very generous support from the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation is a vote of confidence in our outstanding Financial Journalism MA programme.

“Previous recipients of the Marjorie Deane studentships have gone to work for prestigious publications such as the Financial Times, Bloomberg and Reuters.

“The funding will help ensure that the programme will go from strength to strength right through its second decade, providing a unique experience that ensures our students are the best prepared for careers in financial journalism of graduates from any programme in the country.”

Eligibility and how to apply

The Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation will fund full scholarships exclusively for students who have been offered places on the MA Financial Journalism programme.

UK, EU and overseas students are all eligible to apply.

The selection criteria are: academic achievement and promise; relevant practical journalism experience; the potential to make a difference to the practice of financial journalism in a student’s home country.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 2nd May 2017.

The scholarships are among several offered through the Department of Journalism, with 17 Masters students being funded by seven organisations during 2016/17.
