Following on the instruction of Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun and ICFRE are observing the World Environment Day 2017 at national level.

It is being celebrated as an annual event on every June 5 since 1973 to make people aware about the environmental issues and negative changes in environment due to human activities and encourage them to be proactive in environmental protection, to make their surroundings safe and clean. World Environment Day was first established to be celebrated by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the Conference on Human Environment held on 5-16th June, 1972 in Stockholm (Popularly known as Stockholm Conference).  Each year celebration of the World Environment Day is based on the particular theme decided by the United Nations to make the celebration more effective by encouraging mass people worldwide to hugely take part in addressing environmental issues on global scale. It was first celebrated in 1973 with the particular them “Only one Earth”. The theme of last year i.e. 2016 was “Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Trade in Wildlife” and of the year 2015 was “One World, One Environment”. The theme of the current year i.e. 2017 is “Connecting People to Nature”, which reminds all of us to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it.

The FRI has planned variety of activities to celebrate it in a big way including sensitizing people, communities, youths and the society at large for protecting the unique and life nurturing Nature and sustaining a clean and healthy environment. Participating institutions have been requested to send their entries; of which, five best photographs from each institute will be selected and displayed during National Photography Competition to be held on 4th June at FRI. A Slogan Writing competition is also announced on the theme “Connecting People to Nature” which is open for all interested.
