Delhi University’s Institute of Home Economics is all set to offer BA Journalism (Hons) course from the upcoming academic session. With this, the Institute of Home Economics becomes the only sixth college in the university to offer the course.

Already, five colleges in the university — Lady Sri Ram College for Women, Kalindi College, Kamla Nehru College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce and Maharaja Agrasen College — offer the undergraduate course.

“We have already been teaching specialised courses in communication, radio, film production and print media and we have the equipment to support these fields. We decided to expand and offer BA Journalism around three years ago. We will start the course from this session,” said Yuki Azaad, assistant professor of development communication at the Institute of Home Economics.

The faculty teaching this course will comprise of professors currently teaching at the college as well as guest lecturers specialising in various fields of the industry. Azaad said that as the institute offers short-term add-on courses teaching Corel Draw, Photoshop, photography and radio jockey skills, students can also opt for these courses alongside their Journalism Honours.

The process for applying for Journalism Honours will be the same as other DU college applications and the first cut-offs will come out on June 20 in accordance with the DU schedule.

Despite journalism being an encompassing, inter-disciplinary course, only five colleges offered it at the undergraduate level until now. “A large section of society follows the trend of first doing their graduation in different courses like History, Economics and Political Science and then pursuing journalism at the post-graduate level. Due to this, very few colleges offer journalism at the under-graduate level. However, it is time for the course to spread its wings and be offered at more institutions now,” said Vartika Nanda, the head of journalism department at LSR, who is also a prisons reform activist.

Journalism (hons), one of the popular courses at the university, has already received 45,000 applications.
