Warangal: The School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE), Kakatiya University (KU), is all set to offer five new courses from this academic year. A notification will be released soon. The new courses are Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), MA Tourism Management, MLISc and MA Gender Studies.
Speaking to Telangana Today, SDLCE director Prof Ch Dinesh Kumar said that the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), which works under the University Grants Commission (UGC), recently accorded permission to the SDLCE of KU to offer a total of 29 courses including new courses for five academic years from 2018-19 to 2023-24.
“While a total of 350 universities applied with the DEB seeking permission to offer courses in distance mode, only 35 universities were given permission to offer the courses in the first phase. Fortunately, we also got permission in the first phase, and moreover, we were given permission for five years, while many other universities were given permission for only two years,” he added.
Meanwhile, the UGC has also asked the SDLCE, KU, to apply for science courses at postgraduate level by September 18 to get the nod.
Further, the numbers of SDLCE study centres are likely to go up as 15 applications pending with the SDLCE. “While there are a total of 148 study centres in the State, the number of such centres will increase soon,” said Prof Dinesh. SDLCE officials are also trying to get permission for the LLM course from the DEB.
“We used to offer some job oriented certificate and PG diploma courses in the past. But the DEB recently denied permission to offer such courses. However, we are trying to mount pressure along with other universities on the DEB to allow us to offer such courses keeping the demand in view.” Prof Dinesh explained.
