Maharashtra medical institutes are not happy with the response they have received in the first round of seat allotment. The allotment was carried by the Directorate General of Health Sciences (DGHS) and they have not been able to fill up seats. Medical and Dental aspirants are claiming the seats allotted to them in various institutes of Maharashtra, but few colleges are worried as not enough students are taking admissions. 50% of seats in deemed institutes of Maharashtra are vacant. Deemed institutes expect the seats to fill up in the second counselling.

Maharashtra Medical Admissions in Deemed Institutes

All public, Private and deemed institutes were forced a centralised admission system through National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).  In order to get an exemption from Common Admission Process (CAP) conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), various petitions were filled by private as well as deemed institutes of Maharashtra. In May, supreme court gave the final word for admission process. Now admissions to seats in public and private institutes will be conducted by DMERs of respective states. Admissions to deemed institutes and those under All India Quota will be taken care by DGHS.

Vice Chancellor of  Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Ahmednagar- Shashank Dalvi said that the main reason for a large number of vacant seats is deemed institutes admissions before the common admissions for government and private institutes. Deemed institutes are the second option for all medical students but now the students who found their name in state seat allotment round have withdrawn their admissions from deemed institutes.

Medical Seats Vacant in Deemed Institutes

Deemed institutes used to conduct admissions on the institute level and never had enough seats left till the third round. This year response from medical students is not good as institutes have more than 50% seats being vacant. The first round of medical seat allotment was quite low, colleges and deemed institutes of Maharashtra could not fetch much of crowd. Though institutes are expecting seats to fill up in the second round of counselling as medical admissions to government quota and AIQ seats are still going.  There are 1800 medical and dental seats in deemed institutes across Maharashtra.

Institutes with vacant seats are waiting for DGHS second round of seat allotment which will be held on August 8. The second round of seat allotment will be followed up by reallotment of the vacant seats on August 18, 2017. Vacant seats after this round will be will be handed over to the respective institutes on August 27. Later on, institutes will fill up seats at their own level. Though institutes expect 50% of vacant seats to fill up in the second counselling.
