Lake, Osceola, Volusia, Brevard schools cancel classes Thursday, Friday

hools in Lake, Osceola, Brevard and Volusia counties will be closed Thursday and Friday because of approaching Hurricane Matthew.

Additionally, Seminole State College announced it will close at 10 p.m. Wednesday and not reopen until Monday.

The Orange and Seminole county school districts are expected to make a decision about school closings after getting weather updates today.

The University of Central Florida also said it would decide this afternoon whether to cancel classes for later in the week.

UCF student Brooke Jones said she felt “annoyed” as she waited Wednesday for her school to make a decision that would determine whether she would have to take an exam, ironically, in crisis communications at 9 A.M. Thursday.

“Dear UCF, please cancel classes Thursday. I really don’t think my car can survive driving through a hurricane,” she tweeted Tuesday.

Jones, a commuter student who lives about an hour away in Apopka, is hesitant about driving her 1998 Honda Civic to campus in bad weather.

“I don’t feel comfortable driving in a bad storm,” said Jones, 19, who studies advertising and public relations. “I understand storms change and predictions change, but I’d like at least a day of warning.”

As a Central Florida resident, she said she wasn’t feeling too stressed about the hurricane itself.  “Being a local, I know it’s something that happens,” Jones added.

Some friends are scheming about “hurricane parties,” she said, while others, mostly those who don’t live near the coast, were dealing with a bombardment of text messages from worried parents.

School officials urged residents to follow social media and school websites for the latest updates.

Barry University closed its Orlando campus today, as well as those in South Florida and in other communities along Florida’s east coast.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University said it will cancel classes at its Daytona Beach campus after 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.
