Created from a partnership between Reliant and the Texans, the Scholarship for Champions program awards each recipient a $5,000 college scholarship. All winners play on varsity teams, maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and plan to pursue a college degree.

“The 2016 students selected for our annual Scholarship for Champions program admirably demonstrate the ability to balance school, sports and community leadership, and several have also overcome significant challenges as well. Their endurance and success is remarkable and I hope the scholarships the Texans and Reliant provide them will serve as a springboard for an even brighter future,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president, Reliant and NRG Retail.

“We are proud to be working with our friends at Reliant to develop our next generation of leaders through Scholarship for Champions,” said Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes. “Today we congratulate our 2016 honorees and look forward to seeing the amazing impact that they will have on our community and well beyond.”

Teachers, coaches and mentors nominate students in their high schools, and from that pool an independent judging panel selects the recipients. Reliant and the Texans surprise each student at his or her school during a student assembly, presenting them with a scholarship check. Since its inception in 2005, the Scholarship for Champions program has awarded more than $400,000 to 80 students from the greater Houston area.

The 2016 winning students are:

  • Taten Blue – Stafford High School
  • Ahmed Eisa – Sharpstown High School
  • Christine Henderson – Home schooler
  • Justin Herbert – Hempstead High School
  • Yu (Leon) Liu – Magnolia West High School
  • Evan Loyka – Kingwood High School
  • Avery Sheldon – Humble High School
  • Dav’ion Zeno – Heights High School
