A second year BA student, who was caught in compromising position with a neighbour and subsequently set herself afire at her home, succumbed to the burn injuries at district government hospital on Thursday. The girl’s parents had tried to seek justice from the police but in vain.

Speaking to TOI, Nafisa’s father Nuru Ali Shaikh said that their neighbour Aavej Khan (son of Khalil Khan) had visited their house on March 7 when he and his wife were not present. “Aavej forced himself on Nafisa. At that moment my wife came back and saw both of them in compromising position,” said Shaikh, adding, “A terrified Aavej ran from the spot. My wife scolded Nafisa.”

“Later in the evening I came home and asked Nafisa to give a cup of tea. She went into the kitchen but set herself afire. We admitted her to district government hospital in serious condition where she succumbed to her burn injuries on Thursday,” he said.

The Shaikhs went to Bhandara police station but cops refused to register a complaint. The matter was then referred to SP Vinita Shahu and later cops registered an offence under section 309 of IPC against the deceased after three days of the incident. But they didn’t register any case against absconding Aavej. Later her dying declaration was recorded by a naib tehsildar. As per police, Nafisa did not name anyone in her dying declaration.
